  3. The EMI discs should never have been released: Ogdon fumbles and shambles his way through music he'd played much of his adult life with little or no effort. For a man who sight-read the Brahms B flat concerto at a concert (!!!) in his early 20s, to struggle with this repertoire ought to /5(6).
  4. This CD features the acclaimed Finnish pianist Olli Mustonen with piano works by Alexander Scriabin, which have become his signature pieces in recital. The virtuoso sets of Etudes and Preludes cover a wide range of late-Romantic expressions, from heroic to religious, ecstatic to melancholic.
  5. John Ogdon's recordings of Alexander Scriabin's piano sonatas and other works for piano may not be the first choice of devotees of the mystical Russian composer, but this EMI Classics twofer is highly recommended at the affordable reissue price. Those well-acquainted with Scriabin's music will likely hold particular recordings as indispensible -- Roberto Szidon's on Deutsche Grammophon.

  8. John Ogdon is a great guide through this original, complex and mystical music. My only disappointment was, that these two discs don't include three of his most accessible and important works that were part of the original LP release. The Etude OP 8 no 12, the Prelude and Nocturne OP 9 and the wonderful early Fantasy in B minor/5(10).
  9. Scriabin's music is great and Ogden's skill as a pianist is evident. In addition, one gets two cds for the price of one, including all ten sonatas and a few other assorted pieces, intelligently placed between the sonatas based on chronological order/5(10).
